Who are the seven Ushpizin?

The Zohar teaches that seven exalted guests — Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Yosef, Moshe, Aharon, and Dovid — visit every sukkah during the seven nights of the holiday, each leading one night. Welcoming them with the traditional invitation is a custom kept in sukkos across every community.

What does the word Ushpizin mean?

Ushpizin is Aramaic for guests — the same word behind the Hebrew ushpiz, a lodging host. The name captures the custom's heart: the sukkah is a temporary home whose honor comes from who is welcomed inside.

When during the meal is the Ushpizin invitation said?

The custom is to recite it upon entering the sukkah or at the very start of the evening meal, before Kiddush in many homes. Having the text on the wall or standing on the table means the moment is never skipped in the bustle of serving.

Do I need a different Ushpizin piece for each night?

No. A single Ushpizin decoration, card or plaque carries all seven names and the full invitation, so the same piece serves the whole week — only the guest who leads changes from night to night.

What is the difference between Ushpizin decorations and Ushpizin cards?
