Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mezuzah case, and why do Jewish homes have mezuzahs?

A mezuzah case is the protective housing for a mezuzah scroll, or klaf, affixed to the doorpost of a Jewish home. The mitzvah of mezuzah comes from the Torah and serves as a daily reminder of our connection to Hashem and His mitzvos. Mezuzah cases also bring beauty and meaning to the doorways of a Jewish home.

What is inside a mezuzah case?

Inside a mezuzah case is a kosher klaf, a handwritten parchment scroll containing the Torah passages of Shema and Vehaya Im Shamoa. Waterdale's mezuzah cases are sold without a klaf, so you'll need to purchase a kosher mezuzah scroll separately.

What sizes do mezuzah cases come in?

Waterdale offers mezuzah cases designed to fit 5-inch and 6-inch klaf sizes, depending on the style. When choosing a mezuzah case, check the size of your scroll and the product's listed dimensions to ensure a proper fit.

Are clear acrylic and Lucite mezuzah cases available?

Yes! Waterdale offers clear Lucite (acrylic) mezuzah cases with a sleek, modern look. Choose a minimalist Clear Mezuzah Case, a Classic Mezuzah Case with gold or silver accents, or colorful striped designs. These modern Jewish mezuzah cases complement a variety of home décor styles.

What bracha is said when putting up a mezuzah?

The bracha recited when affixing a mezuzah is:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לִקְבֹּעַ מְזוּזָה.

This blessing thanks Hashem for commanding us to affix a mezuzah to our doorposts.

Where should a mezuzah be placed?

A mezuzah is generally placed on the right side of the doorway as you enter, near the bottom of the upper third of the doorpost. The exact placement and whether the case is angled or upright depend on the doorway and family minhag. Consult your rav for questions about proper placement.

Can Lucite mezuzah cases be personalized or given as Judaica gifts?

Yes! Select Lucite mezuzah cases can be personalized with engraving, making them meaningful Jewish housewarming gifts, wedding presents, or gifts for newlyweds. Choose from elegant clear Lucite designs, metallic accents, and hand-painted Kosel artwork to suit the recipient's style. Check individual product pages for personalization options.

Can Lucite mezuzah cases be used outdoors?

Some mezuzah cases may be suitable for exterior doorways, but suitability depends on the individual design and exposure to weather and sunlight. Check the product details before choosing a case for an outdoor entrance, and make sure the klaf will be properly protected from moisture.
