Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shir Hashirim, and why is it recited on Erev Shabbos?

Shir Hashirim (שיר השירים), also known as the Song of Songs, is a book of Tanach that expresses the special relationship between Hashem and the Jewish people. Many have the minhag to prepare for Shabbos early and welcome the Shabbos Queen with anticipation by reciting Shir Hashirim on Friday afternoon. The Shir Hashirim Card features the Hebrew text in an elegant Lucite design.

What is Tefillas Chana, and when is it recited?

Tefillas Chana (תפילת חנה) is the prayer of Chana, the mother of Shmuel Hanavi, expressing heartfelt gratitude and praise to Hashem. Many women have the custom of reciting Tefillas Chana after lighting Shabbos candles. Choose from Painted Tefillas Chana and Watercolor Tefillas Chana cards.

Is Tefillas Chana the same as the Hadlokas Neiros tefillah?

No. Tefillas Chana (תפילת חנה) is a separate prayer of praise and gratitude to Hashem, while the Hadlokas Neiros tefillah includes personal requests for one's family, children, and home. Many women recite both after lighting Shabbos candles, depending on their minhag. You can explore the candle-lighting prayer in our Hadlokas Neiros Tefillah collection.

What is Kabbalas Shabbos?

Kabbalas Shabbos (קבלת שבת) is a group of Psalms and prayers recited at the beginning of Friday evening services to welcome Shabbos. It includes the familiar Lecha Dodi (לכה דודי), which joyously welcomes Shabbos as a kallah (bride). Waterdale's Painted Kabbolas Shabbos Card features these prayers on a decorative Lucite card.

What is Birchas Habonim, and when do parents bless their children?

Birchas Habonim (ברכת הבנים) is the traditional blessing parents give their children on Friday night, often before Kiddush. The Painted Birchas Habonim Card features the bracha, which begins with a special blessing for sons or daughters, followed by the words of Birchas Kohanim, asking Hashem to bless and protect the children.

What is Tefillas HaShlah, and when is it said?

Tefillas HaShlah (תפילת השל"ה) is a special prayer in which parents ask Hashem to bless their children and grandchildren with lives devoted to Torah, mitzvos, and good middos. It is traditionally recited on Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, although it may be said throughout the year. Waterdale's Leather Tefillas HaShlah Book provides the prayer in a dedicated booklet.

What other tefillos can be said for children around Shabbos candle lighting?

The time of Hadlokas Neiros is traditionally considered especially meaningful for davening for one's children and family. Along with the regular candle-lighting tefillah, women may recite additional prayers asking for their children's health, success in Torah, and spiritual well-being. The Painted Leather Hadlokas Neiros Booklet brings together several tefillos, including Tefillas Chana, Tefillas Avos Al Bonim, and Tefillas HaShlah.
