What does the Havdalah text mean?
Havdalah opens with pesukim and tefillos expressing trust in Hashem for light, salvation, and success as we enter the new week. They speak of rising from darkness, the light, joy, and honor promised to the Jewish people, and ask Hashem to grant us success in our ways and learning, along with blessing and success in all our endeavors. Then come brachos over wine and fragrant spices, followed by the blessing over the light of a candle with multiple wicks. The final bracha praises Hashem for creating distinctions: between holy and ordinary, light and darkness, Klal Yisrael and the nations, and Shabbos and the six weekdays.
