Frequently Asked Questions

What text is on the Painted Basic Chanukah Brachos Tabletop With Lighter?
It features the Chanukah brachos, Haneiros Hallalu, and Maoz Tzur. Two brachos are said every night before lighting, with Shehecheyanu added on the first night:

What do the Chanukah brachos mean?
The first bracha thanks Hashem for making us holy through His mitzvos and for commanding us to light the Chanukah lights. The second thanks Him for the miracles He performed for our Forefathers at this time of year. The third, Shehecheyanu, is said only on the first night and thanks Hashem for keeping us alive and bringing us to this season once again.

What do we say after lighting the Hanukkah menorah?
After lighting, we say Haneiros Hallalu:

What does Haneiros Hallalu mean?
Haneiros Hallalu is said after lighting and explains why we light: to remember the miracles, wonders, and salvations Hashem performed for our Forefathers through the Kohanim in the days of Chanukah. It also declares that the lights are holy for all eight days. We may not use them for any practical purpose, only look at them, and through them thank and praise Hashem for His miracles.

What are the words to Maoz Tzur?
Many families sing Maoz Tzur after lighting the menorah each night. The full song is included, beginning:

What does Maoz Tzur mean?
Maoz Tzur praises Hashem as the Rock of our salvation. The opening stanza asks Him to rebuild the Beis Hamikdash, where we will once again offer thanks, and looks forward to the day we can dedicate the Mizbe’ach with song. The later stanzas recall how Hashem saved the Jewish people throughout our history, from Mitzrayim and Bavel to the events of Purim and the miracle of Chanukah, expressing our gratitude for His enduring protection and our hope for future redemption.
